Just to correct you, an ape connection doesn't not relies on the frequency
the client framework does. So no change in the server binaries is required.
If one knows what they doing you could remove the need for a frequency in
client framework with a few line edits. As far as i know only the subuser
feature relies on frequencies. But even then is not worth the risk so he is
better off setting those hosts entries.

I know this bacause I'm running a custom client framework with no frequency
and no problem.
