George, In 2006 only 1 positive PPV tree was found (1 plum tree). Every susceptible tree within 5 miles of the positive that the inspectors could find was tested in 2006, all negative. All trees in this same zone will be tested again in 2007, 2008, 2009 and must test negative in order to lift the quarantine.
Michigan is following the Pennsylvania model for eradication. 23 of the 24 acres of peaches, nectarines, plums and apricots in the 500 meter radius of the positive find have already been removed, piled, and will be burned when we get some rain to reduce brush fire hazard. The final acre will be removed by early September 07. Surveys in other areas of the state by the Michigan Dept of Ag will proceed based on available funds. The goal, I believe, is to continue sampling orchards throughout the state at a 25% level per year. The Michigan Department of Agriculture gets high marks for handling this situation professionally.
