France South West Dordogne valley Bergerac We had a busy night on Easter Monday. We begun all available protection systems at 2 am ending at 10 am (-3°Celcius at minimum, not that bad, but 8 hour long below zero).
Short report at this moment (not all damage has appeared yet !): 8 ha with sprinkler watering 45m3/ha, on apple full bloom, pear, peach, kiwi : perfect protection About 20 ha with 2 wind towers. Protection is efficient till 100m of the base of the tower. Then we have some dead flowers increasing with distance. About one ha with gas heaters for peach stone production (necessary for our virus testing job) good protection. About 10 ha with no protection, damage from 100% to very few depending on the situation, slopes, air movements, closeness to the river Dordogne... Beneath sprinklers, we had the "best" ice load I have seen for the last 10 years. I put some pictures on my google account for people interested. Kiwi and pears. No news on damage as of yet, but frost protection was in full swing with those who have it. Con Traas _____ From: apple-crop@virtualorchard.net [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Megan M. At this point, it is too early to assess the full extent of the damage. From what we have heard, soft fruit seems to have been hit the hardest, although some apple growers outside of Yakima have mentioned possible crop loss of up to 50%. As we receive more updates on the severity of the damage, we will be keeping our readers posted via our weekly electronic newsletter (which, incidentally, you can sign up for by going to www.americanfruitgrower.com <http://www.americanfruitgrower.com/> and clicking on "subscribe").
