i'm guessing, but it sounds like it could be a hand shaking problem. re: running the hp gear off of rs-422, how are you converting? normally if you do it right it works fine, as with an rs-232 modem (which of course they all are, at least all the "standard" modems). most apple modem cables do have the handshaking correctly wired (required for faster modems). i did once find (and i don't know where, i found the problem much later) on the web a cable pinout for this, that was wrong, but worked most of the time, until it damaged the port in my lc475 and then refused to work at all with replacement chips (different brand, but pin compatible) until i finally checked the cable and found the problem, i think the "ground" line on the rs-232 actually wound up tied to one of the handshake lines and it just happened to work anyway, probably due to a static protection diode or something.
