Abandoned software usually are still copyrighted, and therefore usually
not free.  There ARE a handful of us who've been working for a few years
in getting software released as freeware legally--rather than just pirate,
why not help us get it available legally?  (Willie Yeo has the
TreasureChest website, and I've be heading up The Lost Classics Project)
