Byron, you are more than correct. When I was in the sixth grade we had a
program called SRA, I think, where there were levels. You would read a story,
then answer questions. Then you would get the grade card, you would score
yourself. 90 or more 3 times you move up. All it was, was a program on paper.
El Cheapo.

Now they have AR (Accelarated Reading). They read books, and when they are
finished, they go to the special computer lab to do the test. That is ALL that
the computers are used for. Can you believe it? I went into the class one day,
and a boy was at the back on the computer, so I went back, pulled up a chair,
and sat down to help him. He couldn't read the question, much less find the
correct answer. What a waste of computer equipment.

Apple II really did have lots of great programs which used words and pictures
that would keep the kids interested. Unfortunately, the Apple IIe businesses
that made programs for school, forced legislation to pass that favored them,
and their greed cost them from going to the top of the Ed. leader to the
bottom.

Floppy drives are have a life of their own. At some point, the drives speed
will drop to the point that they would not or could not read disks forever. The
greedy ed companies put anti-backup programs on their disks. With kids and
diskettes, fingers get in the wrong place and make the disk useless. I checked
out an educational program from a nearby college, and the first two kids who
used it, accidently ruined it. Buy a backup for 10 bucks, but after that you
have to buy another one for 69.95. Pigs. Buy a book and it will last a life
time. Buy software and it is limited by the user and equipment. It wasn't Apple
that lost to the darkside, it was companies like "Learning Company" that killed
the APPLE IIe in grade School.

You are right. I started from scratch, in 1986 and by 1989 my computer skills
were solid, given any operating system out there. I'm still bitter about the
demise of the Apple IIe. Now days, the kids have computers on which they don't
have to learn keyboarding skills. I had a lady call me yesterday wanting me to
pick up her Dos computer. Take it to the junkyard, I don't mess with any other
kind of computer unless it has Macintosh. I may steal the harddrive and Memory,
but other than that, it is crushed inside a car, where it will be recycled.
