For a IIgs to boot from a hard drive:
1. The first partition has to be ProDOS.
2. The IIgs system software has to be installed on the first partition.
Questions to help us narrow this down:
1. Brand and model number of the hard drive.
2. Hard drive manufactured for use with Apple computers?
3. Is that Mac partition HFS of HFS+? (ADU on the IIgs can not see
a HFS+ formated drive.)

Actually, the ADU is not even finding the HD.
The disk utility from 8.6 allows to do partitions but first has to be OS one
and not prodos.
Does it matter ?

Yes, you can use the Advanced Disk Utilities, ADU,
on the GS/OS install disks. Why do this on a Mac,
when the IIgs is quite capable of setting up it's
own hardware.
