Thanks for the hints, Antonio - too late, I´m afraid. I did take care not to plug in the connectors the wrong way, my son was there, too, everything was as it should have been, but still we could clearly see smoke emerging from the two disk drives, and the smell was quite horrible. I am 99.9 per cent sure it wasn´t our fault. So, what next?
This happened the day we got the machines, some time ago, and luckily there was a third drive which is ok and still works even after having been connected and disconnected several times now. Should we try the two drives again and see what happens? Can we damage the machine by doing so? Alternatively, any hints on how to repair the drives? We already looked inside, and seemingly everything was ok. Toni Theilmeier. If you plug them one row off, you will fry the disk drive's analogue board. Also do not plug/unplug a disk drive (or any controller card) while the computers are on. Oh, and do not throw a 500 Kg. rock on them. Appart from that, there's little you can do that can kill them. Apple ][s are really though machines :-) .
