Joe, the [x] symbols are an undocumented concession to Monochrome users
 - like me and surely those with some simple laptops or palm thingys.

We can't tell what color the number is, so we don't know if it's bad
or good.

Good is green or [+] - 2 buffers have been allocated in low memory.
Fair is black or [-] - 1 buffer has found room in low memory.
Bad  is red   or [!] - You're in trouble now ! No room for buffers.

I'm doing this from (my) memory so I hope I got it right. ,-)
 - but you get the idea.
