Just to "chime-in" on that point....
I always keep it turned on in my setups.
Many sites that visit require HTTPreferer information on all but the
"front" page and will not allow access to any subsequent page unless the
HTTPreferer sent by the visitors browser shows that they have come from a
page "on site".
