I use the beseen hit counter (www.beseen.com) which is free and seems
generally reliable. I don;t use it much for the stats though.
What happens is this : You fill in a few details at their site, and choose a
hit counter style. The hit counter is then sent as an email attachment after
a couple of minutes. It contains a bit of HTML which you cut & paste into
the desired web page. This simply refers to an *image* containing the hit
count , which is generated by Beseen each time your page loads and the image
is requested. There are some drawbacks - it will count all visits to that
page (including  return visits by pressing the back button, and your own
visits) but it can look quite good - I have one on my web site, now sadly
neglected, at the address below - clicking the hit counter takes you to
Beseen's site, and with the admin password, you can view hits by day, week,
etc.
