Commiserations!
I've had the same thing happen with other browsers, despite
(in some cases) warnings.
In future may I recommend that you use the hotlist only as a
temporary location, and regularly make your own collections of
links, which may be linked from the hotlist or the dial page
or desktop. Similarly, use the download directory only as a
temporary location.
We're not communicating known problems efficiently.
