I guess that I did not paint the picture plainly enough. :(

Linux erased all of it. even the LFNs that DOS can't erase.
(usually (but not always), you'll find the the LFNs which wre causing
the problem for DOS were the ones with spaces in them)

this-is-a-photo.jpg
(no problem for DOS because it becomes this-is~.jpg)

this is a photo.jpg
(BIG problem for DOS because it becomes this is~.jpg)

Since DOS can't do spaces in the name... it can't see the file at-all.
