I think for the most part, BSD's are known more as servers than desktops. BSD's also have a reputation for being more secure "out of the box" than Linuces... but of course, you can harden any Linux to be just as secure as any BSD. I had a shell account with a BSD-run ISP and I have a FreeBSD web host for twovoyagers.com... so I "use" BSD all the time in that context. As far as having it on a home machine, I did install FreeBSD 4.4 (the latest release) on my 486VLB-66, 20MB RAM "toybox" just to see if it would "fit." (I think I had a ~400MB drive on it.) Everything CLI ran fine, but I never did try X or any "desktop" software. BSD may well be "better" but it's probably just familiarity (habit?) that keeps me running Linux. - Steve (Linux user for over 4 years)
