Putting aside the question of why it's in unsupported, I'm not sure I understand your statement above. What do you mean that you have to rebuild the driver every time? Why do you need to do that? I also use a madwifi based card and the only time I've ever actually *needed* to do a rebuild is when I upgrade to a new kernel. I usually just build it once and then just keep using it. (The version that I'm running now is probably 2 or 3 months old already.) Yes, I'm not running the latest code, but the driver still works fine, even with slightly old code. And this isn't like running an old copy of ssh or samba where you need to worry about security issues in older code like unpatched exploits. So yes, you have the option of updating to the latest development version of the code as often as you feel like it (and sometimes I do that, just for the heck of it), but why do you need to? Unless there's some new feature or bug fix that's included in more recent development versions, IMO there's no burning need to constantly update it just for the heck of it. Just my $0.02.
