Times have changed. Lots of new cpus are taking advantages from smp
mode. Think off all those PIV with HyoerThreading and the dual core
cpus. And of course all real multi cou systems. So SMP is a real booster
for those systems.

And I guess there's an option for the kernel append line "nosmp". Maybe
this could help you.
