I maintain an i586 arch box from source using abs.
Currently I have

binutils 2.17-4
glibc 2.6-2
gcc 4.2.1-1

built and installed. I don't upgrade that often, so I
missed gcc 4.2.1-2. Current gcc is 4.2.1-3. But:

gcc-4.2.1-3 depends on binutils>=2.17.50.0.18
binutils-2.17.50.0.18 depends on glibc>=2.6.1
glibc-2.6.1 *makedepends* on gcc>=4.2.1-2

So it is impossible for a person with gcc-4.2.1-1 to
build gcc-4.2.1-3 without either going into cvs to get
files to first build gcc-4.2.1-2, or removing
offending makedepends from glibc and seeing what
happens when building glibc using gcc-4.2.1-1.

:P
