I totally agree that workflows should be developed that a non-GIS expert will be able to execute in the browser.We are making Arches app so that it can be used by anybody. :) As you said i must get familiar with desktop GIS tools like ArcGIS or QuantumGIS(QGIS),I installed QGIS on my ubuntu and played a little with it.
