Some mail systems truncate messages that are too large rather than
rejecting them outright. That may be what Gmail is doing, although it
might not be obvious to the recipient. The message will probably cut off
part of the attachment portion rather than the text section the patron sees.

Because the PDF attachment is incomplete, the recipient won't be able to
open it in Acrobat.

If you have a gmail account yourself, try sending yourself a test. If
you can't open the attachment, view the message source (click the
downward arrow next to Reply and choose Show Original from the menu) and
see if there are any indications that message has been shortened. Most
mail systems will add a note at the bottom (e.g. Message truncated) if
the message has been shortened.
