Infotrieve may SAY they offer support for Ariel, but it's been my experience that it's difficult to get in touch with them and they don't call back or email back when you have a question. So, to me, this is no support.

I received an e-mail message back from Chris Evangelista,
cevangeli...@infotrieve.com, and it said that Infotrieve still offers
support for Ariel.

Maybe Ariel is going the way of the dinosaurs?

Since it seems that Infotrieve is not likely to exhibit at ALA, is there
some other method in which the library community should begin clamoring

information concerning the future of Ariel. I'm not usually a

bombarded
by calls from their patrons. Thoughts?

Infotrieve may have been an ALA exhibitor years ago but they've
definitely
not been around at ALA for the last few years. -- Margaret

I would suggest that as many people as possible visit the Infotrieve
booth
and pose these questions. It may be that sales of 4.1.1 have tapered
off, as
everyone who wanted it purchased it when it first came out. As a result,
their sales reps may well think it's a dead issue with us, and may not
be
aware of either the support problems or the large community of Ariel
users
who want to continue using it alongside Odyssey (standalone or
ILLiad-embedded). The more of us asking, the better chance we have of
focussing their attention back to the development issues, testing of
scanners, updating the web site etc.

To what extent should we, individually and collectively, plan on
visiting
the Infotrieve booth at the upcoming ALA annual?

I just got back from the annual SLA conference. I spoke briefly with an
Infotrieve rep who said that they are still supporting Ariel, but wasn't
sure about development. Since it isn't one of his areas of
responsibility,
it seemed unnecessary to delve too deeply into the response time and
other
support issues people have. I did give him my contact info, along with a
note regarding the questions (support for Ariel 4.1.1, Vista
compatibility,
development plans) I had, and he promised to pass it to the woman who
would
most likely have the answers. She was there, but not at the booth when I
stopped by. She is supposed to email me with more information. I'll
post it
to the list once I have it--and if I don't get it, I'll email the
fellow I
spoke with.
