Actually both are legends in their own way. Illiyaraaja is more traditional(folk/western/classical) musician. where ARR is new age musician(techno/western fusion). Though rehman did some carnatic/hindusthani songs, he is known for his techno music initially. Alaipaayuthey song is an nice example.(without destroying the soul of the song)
Both are redefining the music at their ages. Both are experimental and got success too..... :)
Rehman got success in Vande maatharam, Illiyaraaja got in thiruvasagam.....
