I guess you must put your observations into a pragmatic perspective. In the 90s, Rahman was in the turf of his own with a lot of independance, allowing his natural rhythm to flow seamlessly. The movies made were not very much connected to the music, though both in isolation might have been commendable.
But recently, his music is matching up with the storyline excellently. Thats where ARR comes up with stuff noone else can imagine. You can see his pervasive effect throughout the entire storyline. Its not the trend, but his ability to gel with the movie script. You must be able to appreciate that its goddam difficult to do that. Its an interesting transition in the life of any great music director, and great he is.
As far as the stiff competition, I feel there is not even a distant second to Rahman in Asia.... leave alone Bollywood. My views are based on the intensity and the passion of the soundtracks.
