I beg to differ.  The Chopras and Johars are good at connecting with a large majority and this is what Rahman needs more than anything else.  ARR being the versatile composer that he is can do with occasionally composing 'simple' soundtracks which are strong in melody but not necessarily overly experimental.

I'm not saying that the Chopras and Johars are great film-makers, but their most recent films like Veer Zaara and Kal Ho Naa Ho were decent and connected with a large majority of the population.  The respective composers for these films, (Madan Mohan and SEL) produced a soundtrack which was primarily melody driven but with a subtle addition of modern sounds.   AR Rahman could have done just the same without necessarily lowering his usual high standards.

In summary, what's so wrong about simple soundtracks with are driven by melody without being overly experimental?

Interesting topic.

However, I believe the answer is quite simple. Its not that Yash and
Karan make stupid cinema (and that all Rahman's movie are intelligent
: case in point - One 2 ka 4?). I think its a very consious decision
on part of Yash and Karan to not take Rahman.

Let me put it this way -- Rahman is the king of music. However, his
music does not have the same 'hummability' and 'road' factor that can
get his music blasting on the Delhi's auto rickshaws and Agra's
chaiwalas. Before, you swear at me, let me clarify -- I love Rahman's
music. But, you've gotta admit -- for an average Indian -- its easier
to hum 'Kuch kuch hota hai' than 'ishq bina'.

Rahman's music is an exquisite piece -- each time. But, in that
process it has 2 drawbacks for the Yashraj-kind of films: a) its a bit
too complex for the common Indian -- who does not understand music too
well and b) it takes time to grow on a person.

For instance -- can you imagine Rahman creating Its the time to disco
or Pretty Woman. I bet it would have been a masterpiece to listen to,
however -- it would end up having a complex structure of varied raagas
and musical arrangements and mindblowing sound engineering....all of
which take away the common-indian factor.

I would compare Rahman and Jatin Lalit/SEL --- the same way as Madan
Mohan with Shankar Jaikishan/Laximikant Pyarelal. One gives great
melodies -- beyond imagination and other gives more hummable tunes.

Additionally, as a thought -- can you imagine Rahman giving music for
a Govinda movie .... like Viju Shah giving Makhna / Disco mein jaye or
Anand Milind giving Main to raste se jaa raha tha. Its just not
Rahman-ish style to match the genre!

Long live Rahman!
