Rang De awakens to colour of money

The Economic Times

MUMBAI: After Chalte Chalte, Lakshya and Swades, UTV has finally hit
the jackpot with the Aamir Khan-starrer, Rang De Basanti. The slick movie is
said to have had box-office collections of Rs 33 crore in the first week
itself. The film has done well in overseas and urban India mainly, but has not
done so well in smaller towns, UTV officials said.

“The total box-office collections for the first week were Rs 33 crore, which
is a huge record,” producer Ronnie Screwvala of UTV told ET. This includes
collections from overseas and from India, he added.

According to industry observers, although the movie has been well received in
the metros, especially multiplexes, the response has been muted in smaller
towns. Though Mr Screwvala said the movie may not have been well received in
certain single-screen theatres, it has seen full houses in places such as
Lucknow and Latur.

The film, which has been made at a cost of Rs 25 crore, has been co-produced
by UTV along with Rakyesh Mehra, who has also directed the film.

Rang De Basanti’s box-office collection added up to $700,000 in the first
three days in the US, Mr Screwvala said. It is the No 2 grosser in Australia,
after Salaam Namaste (which was shot entirely in Australia), and has also done
well in Dubai. The film has also seen repeat audiences in the first week of the
show, he added.

UTV had earlier produced the Hrithik Roshan-starrer Lakshya and Shah Rukh
Khan-starrer Chalte Chalte and Swades. However, unlike Rang De Basanti, none of
these films did as well.

While it may be too early to say if Rang De Basanti is likely to do well, the
reviews and first week collections show that UTV has a hit (in the traditional
sense) on its hands.

During the past one year, UTV had also distributed box-office hits like Kya
Kool Hain Hum, Parineeta, Bluffmaster and duds like Shaadi No 1.
