His Nayagan was India's entry to the Oscars in 1987! That was 23 years ago. If that wasn't recognition then his other movies have also been been critically acclaimed not just in India but in some of the most reputed media in the west too, well before Dil Se. TIME magazine always review Mani's movies. Always. Perhaps you have only confined yourself to Hindi films in India. No wonder Mani and AR constantly campaign against the term Bollwood because Indian films are much more than that.Sadly, the "Bollywood" audience is completely oblivious to some brilliant movies from other industries in India.
