Here is a real world example that may help.

We have 3 Remedy servers running on the same Sun box. 
devars, tstars, trainars

Dev runs at port 3000 and connects to Oracle server ora-arsdev 
Test runs at port 3030 and connects to Oracle server ora-arstest 
Train runs at port 3060 and connects to Oracle server ora-arstrain 

Each is installed into it's own directory.

OK multiple databses you mean db2, SQL,
