IMHO, the main reason why Windows is not adopted in the HPC community is because they cannot modify/tweak/tune/do whatever they want with the windows kernel. As far as I know, the windows kernel is still a mystery, for anybody except Microsoft, but correct me if I'm wrong. In any case, whether it's for a lack of ability to modify/customize/tune the OS to your needs, cost, or whatever reason, Windows is not there at the present time.

But there can be a variety of reasons.and performance may not be one of them. I would suggest that a primary reason Windows is not used is because it has just recently developed an OS suitable for contemporary HPC applications and because of cost. I agree with you this is not a competition. Organizations can adopt whatever OS they like. However, the fact that Microsoft is not being adopted as the OS of choice for a supercomputer by the organizations that have the 500 most powerful computers, is a rather interesting and telling fact From: Kaiser Norm E CIV USAF 96 CS/SCCE Sent: Fri 06/15/07 1:58 PM To: arslist@ARSLIST.ORG Subject: Re: Linux Rules TOP 500 Supercomputers - Not a single Window$ supercomputer ** With all due respect.I don't think that's a fair conclusion to make. Microsoft didn't list because Microsoft didn't show up for the "competition," which wasn't really a competition. It's just a list of the biggest, most powerful computing systems in the world. Expect to see Microsoft show up more frequently on this list, as Windows Cluster Server 2003 is rapidly gaining acceptance in HPC communities. Linux and UNIX are the undisputed champions in the supercomputer world. There is not a single Windows supercomputer that made it in top 500 supercomputers list The top 500 supercomputers by OS family: http://www.top500.org/stats/28/osfam/ The top 500 supercomputers by OS: http://www.top500.org/stats/28/os/ This definitely must be a big embarrassment for Microsoft, that not a single Window$ box made it to the top 500!
