Andy, Because ARS is a database-centric platform, I think learning SQL programming (any flavor) is beneficial. Knowing how to access the raw data and integrate it with other database applications is good to know.
The second is an ARS API language. Java and C are directly supported, so if you just starting out with programming I would choose one of these. For me, I prefer VB.Net because I have a number of years experience developing in VB.Net, VB, and VBA.
