There are several things introduced that may be of use without the
packaged apps:

- filter error handling, though I have yet to fully understand it, it
looks like you can catch errors, then attempt to handle/resolve them
before you return an error back to the client that initiated the
filter stack.
- performance - can disable status history tracking
- native java api - if that type of thing is of use to you
- new api calls and changes to existing calls
- password restriction/management app
- service workflow action - allows active links to trigger filter
stack execution without updating/creating an entry
- some mid-tier changes
  - persistent prefetch cache
  - wait image/animation

Just a few of the things I've seen so far.
