The import tool loads it into the staging forms all at once, but I have
always clicked on one data type at a time, in the order that they
recommend, to do the actual import from the staging forms. You do need
to be patched to at least 1516 on the DSL application - ignore the
application patches 5 and 6 since they only apply to the non-ITSM
stand-alone DSL.

I originally installed DSL data with ITSM 7.0.02 but did not import it.
I patched the app to 1516, and then loaded the 1518 data over the
original set. Prior to going live, I loaded the updated data from patch
5 (110.7.0.1) and then imported it one type at a time (Version,
Manufacturer, File Data, etc.), without any problem. So I actually
loaded three different versions of the data into the staging forms
before I ever imported it into the DSL. Since then I have uploaded
(installed) and imported the data from patch 006, version 111.03.0.1 -
again, importing it one table at a time just like the
UpgradingVendorData.doc says to.

OK but the documentation says to load one data set at a time while the
KB seems to say to load all at the same time? Which did you do?

If you look in the staging forms you will see that some of the data
sets, like version, are very small, and others are HUGE. Import times
vary accordingly. When you are updating a later version of the data you
will see the same thing. The most time-consumptive (and CPU) task of
all is running the command line installer that loads the newest set of
data into all of the staging forms at once.

Subject: Definitive Software Library Question

**

I just installed ITSM 7.03 on our test server and I am having a problem
with the DSL. I tried to followed the step in the configuration guide to
import the data. It says to select only one option at a time in the
order presented and click Import Data. When I select the first option,
Version, and click import nothing happens or else it processes very
quickly. I then tried Manufacturer and it runs briefly. When I try to
import File Data my user tool seems to hang. I then checked out the
knowledgebase on BMC's support site and found an entry that confused me
more. Here is what it said:

Step 4 on page 388 in chapter 20 of the BMC Remedy IT Service Management
7.0 Configuration Guide says to
"Select an option for the type of data to import. Select only one option
at a time, in the following recommended order"

but selecting only one option at a time does not work.
However, this does work if all options were selected at once. Your user
tool may appear to "hang"/"lockup" for quite some time, but if you let
it go it should respond again after some time and the import should
complete then. There are reports of the user tool being "frozen" for a
few hours, but eventually everything was imported if they did not
disturb/terminate it.

Defect SW00252123 has been submitted for this to find out if this is a
documentation bug, or a product bug.

So are they saying that the documentation is wrong? Should I select all
the options at the same time? Anyone have any experience with this?

Thanks
