You do need to do this field by field. Check out http://rrr.se/en/ RRR|Changefield tool, this will build you the Als and ALG to do what I believe you want a lot quicker than you could manually.
You upload an XML export of your form, select what you want, and it will return code to import. All you do is call the ALG from the original form. It doesn't modify your code.
