We started this way as well (just using ProdCats), until we decided to move those items to the custom class.
The other replies listing caveats about discovery tools and configuration should be kept in mind - although we do not use BMC Discovery, and our other tools (SMS/SCCM) are only used to track client workstations. Network devices are managed manually by our switch team (and they prefer it that way). Like many other aspects of ITSM/CMDB, a lot depends on your local configuration, processes, and needs.
