Claire,

A couple of weeks ago when installing 8.1 patch 1, I was having issues with
the installer not recognizing things correctly. The fix was to clear out
the remedy-related files in the user temp folder on the server, and re-run
the installation. When I asked the list, one of the respondees said they
had the same issue doing a 7.6.04 install. So while not exactly the same
symptoms or versions, its something easy to check (and it took a bit to get
to the right support person that knew to check there).

Good luck,
Thad
