You can try to use a Synth_BUS_DOWNLINK on the bus called in_soundcard, that
would be the alternative. You need to make sure with a mixer application
(like kmix) that there is sound on the microphone at all. You can select
the recording source with the red led there, and you should configure it to
the right volume. The best setup for getting this done is talking into the
microphone while having artsbuilder execute a in_soundcard->play connection
while having artscontrol open and watching the volume bars.
And of course artsd needs to run full duplex.
