"…a lovely gift delivered to the American people by its government in
time for Independence Day. In the 'olden days' this would be cause
for law-abiding citizens to arm themselves and stand up to the
repressive government."

Could this have happened in the 'olden days'?

I suspect this is a function of country sold on the notion of freedom,
democratic choice and freedom; but governed by professional
manipulators pulling every conceivable emotional string to quiet an
electorate all to willing to let somebody else do the hard work of
calling our governors to account. It's really no surprise that the
country that so boldly boasts that it is the freest, most democratic
and the golden hope for all; ever more certainly slides down the
slippery slope of a sort of laissez-faire governance, one in which one
hopes, rather than works for the best.
