The primary reason that the position of City Historian is un-paid (State Law) is to eliminate a potential source of bias in making recommendations to the Council and various boards. Conflict-of-interest issues. For example say I were paid by the municipality and they wanted to raze the Casino. I may say that the Casino had no historic significance to stay with the 'party line' and keep that cash flow. Werner Ps: great comment on that page: "While I had heard that the city had suffered grievous times, nothing had prepared us for the devastation that we witnessed. The city today looks like a bombed out ruin in a third world country. The wreck of the Casino is simply unbelievable. And the Monterey is no more. What we had hoped would bring back nostalgic memories turned into a sad and somber experience" > http://www.asburyboardwalk.com/mail/mail22.htm > > Published History.
