ASBURY PARK — Police have charged a city man in connection with the
April 4 shooting of a 30-year-old city man and a 46-year-old Neptune
woman on the 1100 block of Atlantic Avenue, authorities said.

Around 8:20 p.m. on April 4, Derek Grier of Atlantic Avenue was
sitting in a parked car, and Sharonda Smith, 46, of West Bangs
Avenue, Neptune, was standing near the vehicle with the passenger-
side door open, police said.

A man — later identified as Anthony D. Esdaile, 24, of Summerfield
Avenue — approached the driver's side of the car, pulled out a
handgun and fired several times, Capt. David Kelso said.

Grier was struck twice in the chest, while a bullet grazed Smith's
lip.

Esdaile ran away, police said.

Smith's boyfriend also was in the area, and he drove her to the
hospital, police said.

Grier drove himself to a friend's house in Neptune, and the friend
drove him to the hospital, Kelso said.

Both victims have since been released from the hospital.

After an investigation by city Detective Terry Williams and Monmouth
County Prosecutor's Office Detective Thomas Nuccio, Esdaile was
identified and charged with attempted murder, possession of a weapon
for unlawful purposes and unlawful possession of a weapon. Bail on
those charges was set at $390,000.

When police filed the charges against Esdaile on April 12, he was
already being held in the Monmouth County Jail on unrelated charges.
He had been arrested on April 11 in the city on outstanding contempt
of Asbury Park municipal court warrants, police said.
