I can see a reprimand. Perhaps a suspension. Firing him would be
too drastic.

Criminal prosecution? A complete waste of my tax dollars.

What do you folks think?

Suspended Monmouth official indicted on charges of stealing gasoline

By Bob Jordan • FREEHOLD BUREAU • February 13, 2008

Monmouth County's suspended emergency management coordinator has
been indicted by a state grand jury on two counts of official
misconduct and one count of tampering with public records -- all
third-degree crimes -- for putting approximately 7.8 gallons of gas
from the county motor pool into a privately owned vehicle.

Harry J. Conover Jr., a county employee since approximately 1988,
could face 3 to 5
years of jail time if convicted on any of the counts, though
probationary terms are
common for first-time offenders.

Conover has been suspended by the county without pay since shortly
after being
charged by Monmouth County authorities in March 2007. County
Prosecutor Luis A. Valentin said at the time that on March 13, 2007,
Conover went to the county Central Motor Pool on Center Street in
Freehold Township with the privately owned vehicle of another county
employee. Conover obtained approximately 7.8 gallons of gasoline for
the vehicle and completed a gasoline inventory form on which he
falsely represented that the gasoline had been placed in his own
assigned county vehicle, according to Valentin.

The matter was presented to the state grand jury Jan. 24 by Matthew
Murphy, acting as a deputy state Attorney General. Murphy is a
Somerset County assistant prosecutor. The proceedings were taken
outside Monmouth County because Conover is under Valentin in
Monmouth's table of command. Conover's attorney is Alton D. Kenney.

The indictment notice, filed Jan. 31, said the privately owned
vehicle was a 2002
Chevrolet Malibu and that the gasoline "had a value of less than
$200.''
