Municipalities Also Find Credit Is Scarce

Companies that issue bonds and short-term debt were largely shut out of
the credit markets. But so were cities and counties that rely on
short-term notes to pay for routine operations while waiting for tax
revenues to arrive, leaving them to search for other financing.

Among the $6 billion in new municipal debt issues anticipated at the
beginning of the week, only about $100 million actually came to the

Tied to Wall Street, State Feels the Shock

WHEN economic spasms convulsed Wall Street earlier this month, New
Jersey also shook.

Not with the relatively mild aftershocks felt elsewhere in America,
where people worried about what the financial crisis would do to their
retirement funds or their total net worth.

In New Jersey the impact was immediate, and not just among the young
stock market …

"People fear they'll go from making a really great salary to
flipping burgers. That's not what happens. It's not wholesale
misery," he said.

"That does not in any way minimize the real, wrenching economic pain
many people will go through, for some period of time."
