I think the bigger problem is that we live our lives via soundbytes that we
hear on TV.
We have dumbed ourselves down to the point where a 10 to 60 second piece of
information is all we need to form an opinion. If you like FOX news, and you
hear
somebody say "Obama is a socialist" then you believe it.
There's also a big problem, in my opinion, with the overabundance of 24/7 news
outlets. I
believe that people are dumbed down to the point of not realizing that most, if
not all
have an agenda, and are being used for propaganda. MSNBC's morning shows tend
to
favor McCain just like FOX. They all have some kind of agenda, although I find
CNN and
BBC to be the least partisan.
We also tend to let others do the thinking for us. We sit our asses on our
couches and let
others tell us what's right and wrong. Our own desire to create a convenient
lifestyle is
part of our downfall. It shows up in our waist bands as well as our knowledge
of the world.
And, it's no wonder that our kids test scores are low compared to the rest of
the world,
because entire generations have been raised on soundbytes and distractions.
Kids in America who are doing their homework on computers are constantly
distracted by
text messages, IMs, Facebook, myspace and on and on. And when they aren't doing
that,
they are watching TV that brings them the world in a face paced edited way. I
recently
heard a report on NPR in which a worldwide study was done to see if
multitasking helps,
or hurts kids. Overwhelmingly the conclusion is that it hurts them, because it
doesn't allow
connections to be made or acquired knowledge to sink in. But kids think they
are better
and smarter because they can multitask, which is a false idea.
