Appreciate the efforts of FASS promoting tourism in NE India but reality is
pretty harsh. Besides a few pockets of tourist interest, the region as a
whole is not tourist friendly, terrorism being the prime cause. Lack of
infrastructure is also a bottleneck, but it is something that can be
addressed if the region is investor friendly.
I would find it hard to find a person from the region who would have
travelled extensively across all the NE states. Even an Axomiya speaking
person would find it unsafe to visit all parts of Assam including the Bodo
belts, Karbi Anglong and Cachar hills. Just a few days ago there was the
news of a police vehicle being ambushed in Garo hills where all the police
officers were killed. This is terrorism and no internet savvy western
tourist would want to come to such a place where militants may be firing
from the hilltops.
Add to that the border strifes that always carry on along Assam-Meghalya,
Assam-Nagaland and Assam-Arunachal and the infinite number of bands and
blockages that the region is so used to. So where does the tourist go? There
is no guarantee that the tourist can reach the destination of his choice be
it Manas, Karziranga, Shillong, Cherrapunjee, Aizawl, Loktak or elsewhere.
Sad but true.
