E-mag to promote tourism Smita bhattacharyya Jorhat, Dec. 4: Assamese e-magazine Xondhan.com, which provides varied information about the state and attempts to bring the Assamese diasporas together, is planning to reach out to the grassroots level by opening an organisation to promote tourism in the state.
The e-magazine began in 2012 with an array of information ranging from sports, poetry, literature, and politics till it seriously took to highlighting Assam, its festivals and culture through well-presented pictures and stories. Founder and editor of Xondhan.com Nayan Jyoti Kalita said establishing a group to develop the tourism industry was just the next step and the e-magazine would showcase Assam's every nook and corner that were considered as biodiversity hotspots. "If we have people working with tourists, we will be able to present a better picture of the ground reality. Through the organisation, we will not only promote the major attractions of the state, its problems will also be highlighted. We will inform people about the popular as well as the unknown tourist destinations of Assam." The e-magazine bagged the Manthan 2015 South Asia and Asia Pacific award in the e-culture, heritage and tourism category. The awards are given in eight categories by Digital Empowerment Foundation, a non-profit social enterprise established in 2002. Xondhan.com, which is one of the oldest e-magazines of Assam, uses the Unicode form and will soon have its own Android application. Xondhan has an impressive record of getting on an average 15,000 hits per month since its inception. The magazine was the first in the state to use video interviews and has articles on career, film reports, letters, articles on various topics. Travel writer Bijit Dutta contributes to the magazine by writing articles on tourism.
