Wrest pain forces Gogoi to cancel foreign trip
By Our Staff Reporter
Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has cancelled his foreign
trip, slated for third week of this month on doctor's
advice for shying away from it and not to look after
the flood ravaged people of his state as the
explanation goes.
Speaking to assamlive here, sources close to the Chief
Minister said Mr Gogoi is undergoing treatment of
wrest pain and in view of the gravity of his ailment
he has decided to cancelled the trip to the United
States and the United Kingdom.
The doctor has advised him to have rest for minimum 5
to 8 hours a day and despite it, the Chief Minister
use to spend 7 hours a day in his office.
Even he was not allowed to attend the State Finance
Minister's Conference in New Delhi although it was
important for Mr Gogoi to do so keeping in mind the
state's grim financial crisis.
On the Chief Minister's advice, Minister of state for
finance Nilamani Sen Deka and state finance
commissioner Rajib Bora have left for New Delhi on
Thursday afternoon to represent Mr Gogoi in the
conference convened by Union Finance Minister Jaswant
Singh.
On the other hand, the Chief Minister's office
informed the non resident Indians that heavy flooding
in the state has forced him to cancel the trip. In an
identical message to the Assamese NRIs by Chief
Minister's commissioner & secretary M G K V Bhanu
said, "the state of Assam is, at present, reeling
under the impact of severe and unprecedented floods.
"The administration is making all out efforts for
relief and rescue operations. The situation though
grave, is under control. Under these circumstances, we
regret that the Chief Minister's visit to the US and
USK has been cancelled."
Last month, the Chief Minister's office said Mr Gogoi
is evincing keen interest to talk the Assamese NRIs in
the US and UK for their "valuable suggestions" which
generated a great deal of enthusiasm among them.
Besides, his proposed talks with the foreign
entrepreneurs and big business houses on potentials
available for investment in Assam, he was also
scheduled to go in for medical check-up in the United
States. It may be noted that this would have been his
maiden foreign trip after taking over as Chief
Minister.
