AIDEU HANDIQUE
Asam Sahitya Sabha UK (ASSUK) was shocked to learn that the legendary Aideu Handique had passed away at her home in Kamargaon of Golaghat District in Assam. The heroine of the first Assamese Cinema Joymoti produced by Rupkonwar Jyotiprasad Agarwala was suffering from ailments relating to old age and was bed-ridden. She was 87. Born in an orthodox environment Aideu took the entire society of Assam by storm by playing the leading role in the film Joymoti and was ostracised. She remained spinster. However her sacrifice paved the way for co-acting in Assamese cinema and became 'an icon for cine-lovers'. Aideu was a lady of rare courage and wishdom who also played the role of a path finder of women's liberation movement and her ideals will continue to inspire the next generation ASSUK hurriedly convened a tele-condolence meeting this morning and condoled the demise of the first heroine of Assamese cinema and offered their condolences to the bereaved family.
