I have spent about 15 minutes in www.assam.org
looking for the relevant email that prompt
Sri Chandan Mahanta to write the following email,
but I could not find it in the archive.

I did not mean to write that I am suspicious on Sri
Mahanata, in this regard, but would Sri Mahanta or
someone in the net please show me the relevant link to
the email that prompt Sri Mahanta to write the
following in Assam-net.

I am trying to get a flavour of SPIN and HYPE :-)

Thanks,
Biraj

[Assam] Shame
Chan Mahanta [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Thu, 18 Sep 2003 22:21:11 -0500

I am very distressed at an anonymous piece of mail
that we received this evening. Some one in our
community found it fit, to write scurrilous things
about one of our own, Mr. Barada Sarma of Austin,
Texas.

I make no bones about the fact, that I have had a few
differences of opinion about our community matters
with Sarma-da. Netters have seen how we debated
issues, even today. But it never is on a personal
level. We have always valued and cherished the
friendship that we have enjoyed with Sarma da and
Kumkum Baideu.

Coming at the heels of our spirited arguments today,
this piece of mail was a shock, a complete downer. It
was a symbol of shame for our community. I cant
believe one amongst us would stoop so low to revile
another with such cowardice.

Let us digress here for a moment, and look at the
principles involved. Let us assume for a moment that
all the charges made in the letter are true and
factual. If so, could there have been no legal
recourses? It is not that we have no legal remedy, and
so such an act could be condoned as an act of
desperation by the weak, the powerless and the
disenfranchised. Far from the truth. The stability and
security we enjoy in this adopted land of ours is
available to us all, because of a rule of laws.

It was charged that the object of this attack declared
bankruptcy. Is it a crime? Bankruptcy is a legal
instrument to protect someone who might have gotten
into a situation , by mistake or by chanceeven by
design, from which she has no way of digging out. But
it is a LEGAL instrument. People dont go about
declaring bankruptcy out of choice.Mostly.

Again, EVEN if all of the charges and innuendos
levelled were to be true, HOW we, Assam Netters, could
be in a position to judge it? By taking the words of
the anonymous writer? Is it plausible? Are we THAT
stupid? Isnt the writer capable of even this much of
common sense? How stupid can HE/SHE get?

I invite netters to condemn such acts of cowardice
unequivocally. Sitting around pretending we have not
seen or heard any evil is an act of cowardice too.
And a society of cowards is destined to reap the
harvest it deserves. I hope we would rise above that.
