before coming up with wild-eyed theories on whos jealous of whom or
whos looking at what, it might be instructive to find out what is the annual
budget of each of the leading space-faring nations. india never had any 'prestige'
projects and has managed to satisfy vital needs like remote sensing and weather
forecasting on a shoestring budget. the cost of one US spysat is more than india's
annual isro budget. these needs are orthogonal to whatever others choose to do.

I am actually curious to know what products or technologies have been developed
due to humans inhabiting these spacelabs and orbiters. I see loads of gushing
commentary about 'experiments' etc. but what has been the breakthroughs that
humans have wrought spending time up there ?

it seems all the useful mundane and vital work like weather forecasting, remote
sensing, telecom, astronomy. intelligence gathering is being done by satellites.

perhaps thats the reason why Ariane and japan arent interested in manned orbiters
themselves.
