no need to be so derisive, since non-commie kinds like these things
too. the national need for the indian cricket team to win is
phenomenal. india went gaga over the asiad games back in the 80's.
these things are common.

the Govt has never used indians victories in sports or a gslv program to
garner votes. so your thesis is not right. do you think labourer in kanpur
trying to make a living cares whether gslv works or not? in a democratic
developing country these will never be predominant issues.

there you go. as some of the mails on this forum has shown, there are some who are really smarting from this chinese manned launch.

if you are referring to mr. Salois mail he was justifiably angry at what was
low-class and ignorant flamebaiting. india doesnt need a certificate from
anyone to prove its reputation, the best certi is from paying customers:

the jupiter probes were not very expensive, for instance.

for the usa and europe. the galileo mission to jupiter cost $1.6 billion
in mid-80s which is 3 times ISRO annual budget today.

but their plans look well thought out and consistent.

they are doing both satellites and manned mission. for manned mission the
logical next step is longer flights and a spacelab. they cant fly to the moon
or mars yet. so no extra marks to them for saying the obvious!

what is the corresponding vision of indian space programs?

here: http://www.isro.org/decade_plan.htm
pls add the pslv launch of lunar orbiter in 2008.
http://www.isro.org/isro_centres.htm

for example, it sent up rakesh sharma into space only as a token. it did not follow up on that experience.

because we had nowhere near the capability necessary then.

india should have taken a more active interest in the russian manned flights, at least, and contributed to their programs as a kind of partner maybe. but india soon forgot about it.

I think their space pgm collapsed due to fiscal reasons from late 80s to
late 1990s. 100s of their cosmos sats became dead with no replacement
and even today the ISS faced delays because of russia unable to meet timelines. with time and money their deep intellectual resources will
help them recover.

i am afraid a similar thing will happen to the lunar expedition, if it does not have a technological vision and the motivation to follow through, beyond the political bang.

neocon conspiracy theorists say the moon has ultra pure hydrogen thats
somehow useful for atomic devices and the chinese want to mine that. at
some point a landgrab and rape of the moons minerals will begin. there will
be "rules" decided by those who have a hat in the ring and newcomers will
be left out. its important to keep a foot in the door there, just like we carefully maintain two permanent antarctic stations now.
