Rajen-da,

I had gone with a college group - there is a hike , so you can walk around the woods, even cross a rail track -which was there since Thoreau's time. There is a tradition that when you go to the hut's site( the original was dismantled by the owners of the property once Thoreau left for Concord Village in 1847 -but a fully furnished replica is placed near the parking lot) you take a pieceof rock to mark the site of the hut. The practise was started by a visitor at Philosopher Emerson's place at Boston (he stayed at Harvard I think -there are two big bronze lifelike statues of Emerson at Harvard -by not of Thoreau - I wonder) -to mark the spot of the hut - in 1945 they dug up the spot and found the foundations of the original fireplace -that area -high overlooking the lake - is marked by a rough wall.
He built the whole hut himself -carrying most of the material himself -and fed himself from what he grew in his little garden and swam twice a day in the lake -to clean himself.

He did not mention the word Yogi in his book "walden" - but spoke of the practice of "brahmins of India" - who carry out all sorts of penances (like standing on one leg - bushes climbing on them etc) in the jungles -- in a manner similar to his way of life.. He wrote that in the first chapter I think.
I read just a bit -while preparing for GRE.

Interesting! I am glad that you visited Walden Pond. Is it the same house built by Thoureau that they are preserving? I was always thinking that the Walden Pond resembles the modern day Vedic 'Banyasram'. But I did not know the there is reference to Indian Yogis in his book. Do you think Thoureau might have got the inspiritaion or the idea from Vedic Banyasram?.
