10,000 primary schools don't function in Jharkhand
By Indo-Asian News Service

Ranchi, Nov 4 (IANS) Of the 16,500 government-run primary schools in Jharkhand, around 10,000 are almost non-functional, says a study.
The study, conducted by the Sampurna Gram Vikas Kendra, in all the 22 districts of the state paints a gloomy picture of school education.
According to it, 16,500 government-run primary schools were opened to educate children below 14 years.
But reportedly only 6,136 of them are functional. The others function only on paper and many have no buildings, no teachers and no students.
The government filled 7,500 posts of primary school teachers last year. But the effort seems to have proved futile.
According to the study, there are around 540,000 children in the six to 14 age group and only 115,000 attend school. The rest work in kiln factories and hotels, as domestic helps or are simply rag pickers.
Jharkhand's literacy rate is 54 percent against the national average of 65 percent. And the female literacy rate is just 37 percent.
The lowest literacy rate among women (20.44 percent) has been recorded in Pakur district.
