Justice Phukan (known as Moni to his close friends and relatives) is known for his .... and how he got to the "Justice" position from a very "modest" beginning at Shillong! He got ambitious when he was made "Legal Remembrancer" of Meghalaya (at the time he happened to be a neighbour of Mr. B. B. Lyngdoh, CM, Megh.).

those who know him also know his character. Really no surprise this bit of news!

C'da,

BTW, does anyone know who D.Goswami, IAS, currently being accused of
misappropriating huge sums of Bihar flood-relief funds, is? Is he an
Assamese Goswami by any chance?

No, but there is Justice Phukan who is in the news all over the place. They are investigating why he (and his wife) was given special (V V IP) treatment by the Defense dept (India), Indian Airforce flights, red carpet, the works. Of course all this while he was the judge for the case involving George Fernandez, Defense Minister at that time.

Shades of Chenney - Justice Scalia goose hunting trip?

*** While I join you guys in your wishes, I shall however remain
deeply skeptical, on many grounds:

*** Will the Center let the prosecutions go on? Assam will have to
       get Delhi's OK first.

*** Whether Assam' govt. investigators and prosecutors will be
either willing or able or both, to produce evidence that would stick?

*** How long it will take to go to court? And when could hearings
take place, what with never-ending postponements granted by
justices to either the prosecutors or to the defense lawyers?

*** Whether political pressures would come to bear depending on
who might get implicated, along with those being accused right now?

If past experience is any guide, after years of slowly dangling in
the wind, things will quietly disappear, like ALL OTHER such cases.
Have you EVER seen or heard of any such person being successfully
prosecuted and convicted, of anything? If they were it would be all
over the place in the media as an watershed event, not just in Assam,
it would be national--and who knows may even become international
news :-).

Assamese Goswami by any chance? He is very big news all over India
right now. If you jot the name down and search Google, he would be
all over the place.
